Sarawak Liberica Refinement Project Part 6
We were invited by to visit Long Bedian, Long Kovok, and Long Wat, Long Mebang and Long Meraan deep within the Sarawak rainforest.
This visit provided us with valuable insights into the local socio-economic landscape and allowed us to introduce indigenous communities, including the Penan, Kayan, and Kenyah, to the potential of coffee cultivation as a sustainable source of income.
We are very glad to have this rare opportunity to share knowledge about coffee cultivation with my Kelabit friends in the oldest longhouse in Bario, and to discover that Liberica can bear fruit at Bario’s altitude.
A technical sharing session with coffee farmers in Lawas, Sarawak — funded by Yayasan Hasanah and Kementerian Kewangan.
Diving into crop economics and agricultural practices together, this event marks a meaningful step forward, and we’re excited to see Liberica, Canephora, and Arabica coffee thriving in the region soon!
Big thanks, also, to our Liberica Refinement Project reps — Lee, Dr. Joshua, and Dr. Samuil — for making this possible
Together with the ARC team, we continue designing coffee fermentation and maturation experiments across Sarawak’s varying seasonal climates. Our aim is to identify the best microbial strains to control fermentation and optimize the flavor of Sarawak Liberica.
On July 10, we completed a full-day rural coffee cultivation and processing training at Kpg Taba Sait. The villagers excitedly shared that there are already over 10,000 coffee trees bearing fruit in the hills behind the village. Many thanks to Yayasan Hasanah and Diana Jitam & team from ARC for the support!
Teaming up with Sarawak Serumpun and the Sarawak Tourism Board, we brought Sarawak coffee to the Osaka Expo Trade Fair in Japan — where guests had the chance to experience its unique flavours. The response was incredible, with warm recognition and praise from all around.
Over four days of promotion, we also had the honour of sharing the story and progress of Sarawak coffee with Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah, Dato Sri Karim, and their distinguished guests.
For the first time, our distinctive Sarawak Liberica was not only served as a coffee beverage, but also transformed into exquisite dishes by award-winning Malaysian chef James Won — showcasing its potential beyond the cup.
